Locked childhood

Contribution to The Exquisite Collective by Venezuelan artist living in the UK, Marianna Madriz.

“Taking as starting point Jorge Moreira’s artwork, my piece is a representation of a Venezuelan childhood. Although Venezuela is a country famous for its landscapes and its people, it is also a country famous for suffering, and continues to suffer from insecurity and social instability seemingly unstoppable: robberies, kidnappings, killings, corruption … This insecurity is expressed visually in doors and home windows, which are always fenced by bars, showing a false security.

This insecurity is part of my nationality, because I grew up with the fear and paranoia of walking in the streets until the moment of migrating to Europe. The dark creatures are representative of all the insecurities that terrify Venezuela. She just hopes that one day the monsters go away so she can go out and play in peace.”
